Hrm, silly me; I used the plural for some dumb ass reason.
Anyway, a homunculus is a prepared vessel that you can have Spirits inhabit so you don't have to run out there and get shot at yourself. The plasteel version is stupidly expensive but capable of punching people into orbit.

The plasteel homonculus has a biiig problem, and that's how to get it where it's going... You can't have it walk through the open, and it can't materialize right where you want it... Mages usually don't have big vans to transport huge metal magical constructs - in fact, many teams are totally without any means of transporatation if they lack a rigger. And until the rigger book comes out, I foresee that there won't be many riggers around.

Well, I never really meant to imply that big ass regenerating metal golems are a tool for the subtle.

I would expect that if it were to be done at all it'd be by the corps themselves via a long term bound services for highly, highly sensitive areas. A Force 6+ regenerating Plasteel homunculi set to donkey punch anyone who wanders past Gate 3 without an appropriate talisman could definitely be discouraging to intruders.

SR4 got rid of the semi-magical substance that made everything super better with only a modicum of additional cost.

When it is released. Catalyst no longer gives release dates until they have the stuff in the warehouses. However, the latest news says they have a lot of stuff in for it, and that it is almost ready for printers.
