So, the request to put up a Shadowsea/Jackpoint forum got me to thinking: Why? No, not why bother, but why just a forum? Why not do something that somewhat mimics what ShadowSea/Jackpoint/etc really is? One option (that popped into my head just now actually) is that we could somehow convince the staff on here to somewhat convert newseattle.org into something like ShadowSea. I mean we already have to sign up through here in order to get an account on the game, so why not?
My first thought however, and one that got me to start doing some research on the pdfs I have is this: Why not make a separate website link that basically draws from the ideas from the likes of ShadowSea, Jackpoint, Nexus, and Exchange? If there isn't room under the newseattle.org, I'm willing to front the money needed to set something like this up (as long as it isn't overly expensive of course). I'll start doing research on editing and maintaining a project like this, but for now I'd definitely prefer to have someone (or some people) that is already knowledgeable.
I'm thinking something that we could post up character dossiers, information gleaned from runs that you'd like to share with other
runners as some sort of advice, and maybe some sort of Merit/Point/Rep system. Blogs could be linked (since you can likely find many a blogsite out there that is free or has a very small fee) or we could create blogs through the site.
My job has recently switched to me being more immobile in the evenings, so it allows me plenty of time to come up with crazy ideas that probably don't make sense. I initially started thinking of how cool it would be to have a Jackpoint style listing thing that you could post up potential runs/plots, character information, and whatnot. Then I realized that one forum addition could be a little... meh. I then thought about that complex forum system that Denver has set up and my nose started bleeding. I mean, great and all, but seriously, it makes me cry just thinking about it. Anyhow, the potential to create something crazy for the Seattle Shadowrun (and the general Shadowrun) community is too tempting of a possibility. I might even try and figure something out even if the response is more or less negative. Get it all figured out and posted up and blamo, re-pitch the idea with flashes of wonderful awesomeness (that potentially won't be presented until January of next year *sadface*).
If someone is interested in doing something like this, I am MORE than willing to front the cost needed for hosting services. If I was back home, I'd just throw up my old server computer system and start getting back into the grove of webpage editing (I haven't touched anything resembling web page editing in several years other than wiki style stuff) and figure out how to host some sort of service through it. But alas, I'm not there.
Ahem, that was going off in another direction. Anyhow again: If someone (can be plural!) is interested in assisting in a project like this, toss up a reply or send me a PM. Alternately, you can simply email me at
ryanbusbyalt@gmail.com. I have several ideas that I'd like to throw around concerning some sort of web page style ShadowSea.
Additionally, I'm not pitching this simplify baked (I work from 12am to 8am local time right now) idea solely for the fun of it. I think something like this that is actively maintained could even draw in new players, people who want to GM, and even people who'd like to share their own advice and opinions on how we could enhance the site (New Seattle and our unnamed ShadowSea style site).
Before I end this spammy rant of a post, this is a rundown of what I envision (most of which is being pulled from Runner Havens):
A character Dossier with links to active alts. Something that a Mr/Ms
J./a fixer can use as a pool.
A list of rumors flying around Seattle based off of runs done by players.
A blog (if desired) made by or linked by individual players/groups of players (I'm looking at Ducks for that inspiration)
A credit rating given out by runners, Js, and fixers.
A listing of hard to find data compiled by our runners and hackers.
Some sort of wiki (shadow-wiki)
Postings of Blacklisted NPCs/PCs/whatever. All to be voted upon by players. Maybe nix that in favor of just the credit system.
A comprehensive list of regularly used Js (generic or not), contacts that people would like to share, etc for IC or OOC purposes. I know we have this on the forums already, but wouldn't it be easier to easily click and find the information instead of searching for it on the forums?)
Jobs posting. This doesn't have to be actual runs even. This could be something like Sigil needing to find someone who can hook him up with some tuneups on his drones, or someone needing to find data and need a hacker to help out, or something.
Possibly in the future, a list of teams that actively come together on runs (even though I'm anti-dedicated groups, I try not to have bias towards them!).
That's just a few of the ideas I have. I hope I can garner some support for this. If not, I'll just figure out how to put things
together over the course of the next 6 or 7 months then try and re-pitch it once I get back to the states (and hopefully have some sort of shell set up for people to take a look at). I know this could be a major undertaking, but I think the payoff will be well worth it.
Finally, does anyone have any suggestion on website editing/creation tools to download and mess with? I have some on one of my computers back home (that are probably grossly out of date), but not on my deployment laptop. I was thinking of tooling around with making a blog, website, etc offline to get myself back into the flow of site editing. Free/Costly, it doesn't matter. As long as it is userfriendly, offline, and decent, I'll look into it.
