We all get a little nuts, sometimes.

Okay, so I have an idea in mind for a few runs or series of runs. However, I'm not fantastically well versed in SR4 rules (translated to uber newb).

What I need to help me GM some of these runs, is technical input. E.g. .. if I was doing a data-steal.
What would I need to set up as far as the matrix side of things, Security, ratings, what kind of rolls to expect.

The story I have, the mechanics behind it are lacking.

You have two sources of information available to you. In the main book there is a list of sample systems, the key things you need to worry about are Firewall, Response, Analyze, and what IC/Spiders might be in place.

Unfortunately, the hacking rules are a bit of a tricky thing but here's the main thing:

Everytime an unidentified icon does anything to the system, like trying to exploit a password, the system gets a cumulative firewall + Analyze cumulative test to find the hacker at a threshold of the hackers stealth. So if the hacker takes 2 tests, the system gets two rolls where the hits add up to try and defeat the stealth of the intruder.

If the hacker manages to get an admin account and come back, the system won't notice them, but IC and security hackers might. In which case the test against the stealth is an opposed roll, most hits wins.

If a system goes on alert, then the firewall of the system goes up by 4.

Only really tough systems are likely to have more than 4's in firewall, response, etc. There is no upper limit, but anything 7+ is like violet/ultraviolet level and is likely going to slap around practically anyone who tries to break in. They are rare cuz they are expensive to make, and maintain.

A program (That includes IC) is capped at the rating of the system. IF you run a rating 6 IC with rating 6 programs in a rating 4 system, then it is reduced down to 4's.

Depending on the hacker/techno, a rating 4 system could either be child's play or a solid challenge. Dice of course, can make even hard things easy, or easy things hard of course depending on the dice gods.

Honestly, your best bet is to simply read, and re-read the hacking part of the main book. Unwired has some extra stuff but the core ways of doing things is in the main book.
